2015 Cycling

Juneclick for this month's league table

Kings Arms, Thrapston

Just seven Embers out this week. We were met at Lyveden New Bield by Stuart Drage of the K&DMCC. Maybe Stuart will join us some time - if he wasn't put off by our bare knees.

This week we kept off the muddy tracks although John and Grahame came along a bumpy bridleway to the meeting point.

Our route took us via Kinewell Lake on the way to lunch at the Kings Arms in Thrapston.

In the afternoon we looped round on quiet roads into Oundle for our customary coffee and cakes at the Coffee Tavern.

A gloriously sunny day that we hope heralds the beginning of a fine summer.

Fradley Arms, Fradley

Lots of Embers on holiday so someone had to do the cycling this week. It was down to five riders to set off from Donisthorpe in search of adventure and lunch.

Our route took us to the National Memorial Arboretum where we were not suitably attired to join Prince Harry for the dedication of the Camp Bastion Memorial Wall. So we went off for an early lunch at the Fradley Arms.

Food was fayre and square but we refused to pay extra for gravy on our meat pies.

Blue Cow, South Witham

Seven Embers gathered at Melton Country Park before heading east along roads we haven't explored before.

It was a bit like an athletics meeting - field and track events. At least we were away from traffic and it wasn't muddy.

Our route took us across several small level crossings. At least we didn't have to cycle over steep bridges.

At lunch-time we sampled the fare at the Blue Cow Inn and Brewery in South Witham. Then the road back took us into a cool wind.

Back in Melton we headed for Sainsburys for coffee and cake before Grahame, Derek and John cycled back to Syston.

Star and Garter, Chelveston

Today we were joined by Stuart Drage from the catering industry oops, sorry, that's me mumbling. From the Kettering and District MCC. Stuart made our number up to ten for a repeat ride along the Nene cycle route.

Stuart followed us as far as an old rusty bridge where we had to balance across on the girders. Therefore he missed half a mile of cycling through nettles in shorts.

No sign of a decent hostelry in Higham Ferrers so we continued to the Star and Garter at Chelveston and this was a very good choice.

After lunch it was a short ride back to the Tasty Bite cafe for coffee and cake. Except for John, Derek and Grahame who still had another ten miles to ride.
