2015 Cycling

Julyclick for this month's league table

Wheatsheaf, Atherstone

Clouds, a slight breeze and a few spots of rain. Excellent for cycling after the hottest July day on record the day before.

Ten Embers missed their banana break because they stopped for tea and cake at Harshill Yard cafe instead.

From there it became another hunt for a pub. We passed several that were closed or wouldn't serve us. In the end we were welcomed at the Wheatsheaf in Atherstone.

We made our way back with a final pause at Sutton Wharf for ice-cream and more cake.

From there the group split into six riders returning to Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre while Derek, Grahame, John and Richard S returned to Kirby Muxloe.

Wharf Inn, Welford

Headed out from Lutterworth for Husbands Bosworth where we watched gliders take off. Then on towards Naseby where, down one of the lanes, John, Dave and Grahame tried unsuccessfully to capture a sheep which had got out of a field.

Cycled to Welford and had a meal at the Wharf Inn. Then back via canal through stinging nettles flanking the path.

Tea and cakes in Lutterworth before Mush and Richard C went back to their car, Richard S, Grahame, Dave, John and Derek returned to Cosby and I went to Enderby.

Malt Shovel, Shardlow

There were eight Embers out today, Mush, Richard C, Mick A, & Dave cycled 26 Miles. John, Graham, Derek & Richard S, cycled from Coalville.

We did the same route as before, stopping off at Mercian Cycles, then on to Shardlow for dinner at the Malt Shovel.

Cape of Good Hope, Warwick

After a warm up lap of Cock Robin Wood nine Embers set off on the Lias Line Cycleway from Rugby to Warwick. This is quite a long summer ride but is fairly flat except for a few link paths to the off road sections - and Snowford Hill!

To reach the Cape of Good Hope our interepid explorers crossed over the water by balancing across the lock gates.

Next time we will use the bridge that we passed in our hurry to get to the pub.

On the way back we made two stops for cake, coffee and ice-cream. No wonder we didn't get back to the start until nearly 6pm.

Greystones, Sawtry

Ten Embers out on a typically chilly July day. We set out east from Thrapston avoiding all the busy main roads.

Bob Nash met us at The Graystones in Sawtry where we have stopped in September last year.

Our return route was via Oundle where we had coffee and cake as usual at the Coffee Tavern.

In Oundle we paused to admire the knitted bollard warmers. Essential for an English summer.
