2016 Cycling

Juneclick for this month's league table

The Beehive, Grantham

Just four Embers made the trip from Melton to Grantham - after Ben pulled out with siezed rear wheel bearings.

The four riders reached the Beehive Inn in Grantham for lunch. Dave and Richard C covered nearly 40 miles. Richard S and John A totalled 64 miles each from Syston. (Ben was glad he got out of it!)

Boars Head, Hampton Lucy

With many Embers on - or preparing for - holidays we fielded six riders from Kenilworth on a brilliant summer day.

Much of the route was along bridleways, across fields and alongside the Grand Union canal to reachthe Boars Head in Hampton Lucy and then back to Hatton Locks Cafe for ice cream.

Trent Lock, Sawley

After a few days of thunderstorms bringing heavy rain, this was a day of pedalling through puddles. Sometimes it was difficult to tell the river from the cycle route.

Six Embers arrived at the Trent Lock Inn for lunch and the return journey was a good deal brighter than the morning. John A had the pleasure of mending his puncture in sunshine.

The Woodpecker, Raunds

Seven Embers set off from Thrapston along the River Nene and judging by how wet we became we could have been in the river. We took early shelter for coffee in the Woodford Mill Tearooms before continuing to Chelveston and then on to Raunds. We enjoyed an excellent lunch at The Woodpecker.

With little sign of any improvement in the weather we headed back to Thrapston for coffee and cake in the Tasty Bite Café to complete the day.

The Scales, Lichfield

Nine Embers headed due west, pausing briefly at Harlaston to consume bananas. In Lichfield we made our way to The Scales where we decided their inexpensive main courses required supplementing with puddings.

We returned via the National Memorial Arboretum where preparations were being made to remember those who fell at the Somme, one hundred years ago.

See if the weather improved in July.
