Mayflower MCC, 26th Pilgrims Rally, August 2001

On Friday morning, 17 August 2001, the following participants met for the England tour: Jürgen Krechel, (BMW K100), Udo Krechel, (BMW R1150GS), Hans Mondorf (BMW K100RS), Walter Trappe, (Yamaha XV535 Virago)

This was a year with nothing exceptional to report. The usual journey to Calais, crossing by ferry, from Dover the drive to "The Huntsman and Hounds" pub in Althorne, Essex.

Welcome!
Pilgrims Rally 2001

Welcome to this, our 26 Pilgrims Rally.
We hope you had a pleasant and trouble free ride on your way here and we hope that your stay with us will be enjoyable. As you know this is the first time at this site so we ask you to treat the pub staff gently! As you can see we have a marquee, which houses a bar and a disco, the pub will remain quiet for those of us that don't want to enjoy the music. There is free tea and coffee all weekend in the marquee and food available from the pub.
It's going to be different this year with a pub with real toilets, but what it will do to numbers we don't know. Unfortunately we had to move the date to fall in with other arrangements at the pub (they had a caravan rally here on the 3-5 and Jim, the Landlord got married on the 11th !) and this weekend clashes with the BMW Owners Club 50th Anniversary celebrations in Malvern and the Auld Reekie in Aberdeen, but, hopefully, this will be better than both of those !
Things and places of interest in the area by Phil Jones a 'local'. Burnham on Crouch is the nearest big(ish) town and is about 4 - 5 miles on the B1010 from the site, the road will take you through the 'Burnham Bends', there are 10 of then and fairly tight 90's, so be warned. Burnham has the attraction of a 'Promenade' walk past the yacht clubs and along to the Marina, it is also possible to eat and drink along the 'Promenade', my favourite drinking spot on a fine day being the jetty outside The White Hart, with eating and drinking being done in the Anchor Hotel, the Star also has a good court yard and food. The High Street has the Ship Inn and good kebabs and pizzas at the Burnham Grill. Also of use are a Fiveways Co-op with cash point, there are also Barclays and Nat West, and a number of ‘offies'.
Between breakfast and tea, there are a number of places to visit. Between Burnham and Southminster we have Mangapps Farm Railway Museum, a farmers personal train set' with mile track, stations, sheds, rolling stock and steam trains and diesel's running most weekends. Heading out from Southminster there are a lot of nice villages such as Tillingham and Bradwell with greens and pubs. If you get as far as Bradwell village, follow the signs for St Peters chapel, on the headland, 14h century (ish) chapel, an excellent spot on a nice afternoon with good views over to West Mersea. Bradwell also has one of the first nuclear power stations due to begin shutdown next year, but the visitor centre is not always open on a Saturday! The nearest true big town, is Maldon, a nice old High Street with shops, cafés and tea rooms etc, follow the signs to Hythe Quay or Promenade park for a walk, look at the Thames Sailing Barges and have an ice cream. If anyone fancies a swim there is the Blackwater Leisure Centre near Promenade Park, or on a good day you can swim in the lake at the park. Also St Peter's School on the way into Burnham has an open-air heated pool, which is open to the public £1 per hour for adults and 50p for kids with changing rooms and showers. If any one needs to know anything, where anywhere or something is I will try to help, ask a Mayflower member for Phil Jones.

Thanks,
The Committee

Ride Home Safe!

There was a marquee set up behind the pub on the large lawn. As determined during the research for this report, none of the participants found photos. Nobody can remember what we did during the day on Saturday, apart from drinking beer.

I swear we were there. Walter Trappe looked in his moving boxes and lo and behold, look what he found.

As in previous years, Sunday the usual route to Hawthorn Farm Campsite & Holiday Park for the last night.

Monday morning the ferry to France. However, there is a small anecdote from this return trip. Shortly after the border between France and Belgium, Walter Trappe had to fill up with petrol at a motorway service station because of the small tank on the Yamaha. Udo Krechel with his BMW R1150GS was of the opinion that his large tank was enough until Walter had to refill it the next time. But he had miscalculated. It took a while and Walter and I noticed that Udo and his brother Jürgen were no longer behind us. So we drove to the next parking lot and waited for the two. In the meantime, on the hard shoulder, Jürgen poured petrol from the tank of his BMW K100 into an empty water bottle and filled it into Udo's tank. Finally, both of them came into view and we drove to the next gas station in a very fuel-efficient manner.

From there on we all adapted to the short tank rhythm of the Yamaha. Otherwise we were spared from technical problems.
