2019 Cycling

Juneclick for this month's league table

Rose and Crown, Farndon

Head first into June and eight Embers headed out from Gunthorpe Lock and found a quiet route to Stoke Field, site of the last battle in the Wars of the Roses.

Just a bit further up the old Fosse Way we reached the Rose and Crown in Farndon, nicely timed for lunch.

We then took a look at Farndon Marina, Ben got lost in the nature reserve but we were back at Gunthorpe Lock in good time for tea and cakes.

Buck Inn, Flixton

This week the Embers' local cycle ride was good and truly rained off. However, three Embers who were holidaying in Suffolk took advantage of slightly drier conditions to cycle from their base in Cratfield to the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum near Flixton.

Lunch was taken in the nearby Buck Inn before returning on traffic free roads.

The Suffolk punch-drunk Embers managed a total of three days cycling during their wet holiday. Bob Nash got to grips with his new ebike but stayed at base to look after poorly Ben on our qualifying cycling day.

Rose and Crown, Hose

Seven Embers struck out in a southerly direction from Gunthorpe Lock and found their way once again to the Rose and Crown in Hose.

Another Embers feeding frenzy that you can roll into.

Coach & Horses, Abbots Bromley

There were 8 riders today with three coming in by bike from various locations and meeting five others at the Marina. Riders were Velo John, Graham, Dave, both Richards, Ian B, Mick and Simon.

First order of business was of course to start with a coffee at the marina café. With this onerous duty performed Velo John led us on a merry dance around the Burton-on-Trent area. Welcome back to John after his motorbike tour of East Germany.

The outward journey took us first west to Hilton then south west through Rolleston, Anslow, Hoar Cross and finally to the Coach & Horses, at Abbots Bromley for a well-earned lunch.

A roundabout route home went via Newborough, Tutbury (by the coffee factory) then back through Hilton to Mercia Marina.

There is obviously a lot of work for John in creating these routes and we are all very grateful. Unfortunately his long suffering front mudguard did not share the feeling and finally gave way and tipping him off. Just proving that no good deed goes unpunished.

With fantastic weather all day and 40 miles covered it was a superb day out.

Looks like summer might be round the corner...
...or at least, July on the next page.
