Old Red Lion, Welham

Seven Embers met at East Carlton Park and then headed west in search of an accommodating hostelry, eventually settling on the Old Red Lion at Welham soon after opening time.

From there it was a short ride into Great Bowden for more refreshments at Bowden Stores. Heading back east, the fine day and dry conditions tempted riders into a bridleway before the typical English summer turns it into a mud bath.

Including all Embers rides this week, many Embers cycled miles.

Unicorn Inn, Orton-on-the-Hill

We met at Sutton Wharf where we were entertained by the motorists being bedazzled and bewildered by the pay-and-display machine that will not take cash or recognise credit cards and is in a mobile phone not-spot.

Even though we tried to set a leisurely pace we needed to take a detour to avoid reaching the Unicorn Inn too early for lunch.

The return route was more direct so we were able to relax back at Sutton Wharf with refreshments and more entertainment. The uncertainty of parking at Sutton Wharf has caused us to change future rides scheduled for this area to Bosworth Battlefield or, as Embers did this week, start from Desford.

This week many Embers cycled miles between them.

Sun Inn, Cottesmore

I wasn't expecting to be back out with Embers but now I have electric legs can enjoy rides like today in Rutland. Beautiful Spring day and laughter with the Embers through some lovely countryside.

- Peter Wright

Lots of families out enjoying the fresh air round Rutland Water. We met at Rutland Nursery and then followed the cycle track anticlockwise. At Eleven we paused for our usual banana break and telephoned round until we secured a lunch booking at the Sun Inn at Cottesmore.

This week many Embers cycled miles between them.

The Struggler, Eagle

Seven Embers met at the Sconce and Devon Park, Newark-on-Trent. We cycled through Norton Disney to get to The Struggler pub in Eagle for a pint and a meal.

We returned to the park via the Swan and Salmon, on the Trent River, for refreshments. 47 miles for all the riders.

Carol and Tim did their qualifying miles on the High peak trail from Cromford. Four enterprising Embers claimed their ride over the Purbeck Hills to Corfe Castle.

This week many Embers cycled miles between them.

Another record-breaking month?
