Railway Arms, Thorpe on the Hill

The forecast for Thursday demanded a vote to decide if we should delay this week's ride. The vote went heavily for Friday. Nevertheless, Velo John forged ahead on Thursday.

Local Hero, Leicester

Friday's Embers' ride was a bit different from our usual rides. We went Elephant hunting round Leicester. Some of the places we visited Leicester Uni, De Montford Uni, Tigers ground, City Stadium, Abbey, Victoria and Nelson Mandela Parks, Magazine and Old Leicester.

Lunch at the Local Hero, Freemans Common, then ended in Curve Theatre for coffee or tea and cake.

Coach & Horses, Markfield

Eleven Embers met at Ratby to find the car park closed by foresters so those in cars invaded the local streets. VJ then led us north west through Ratby Burroughs wood and around Thornton Reservoir. From there we went into Bagworth and on towards Ellistown but turned off to Stanton under Bardon. In Stanton we annoyed road workers by ignoring the road closed signs and made it to the Old Thatchers Inn. However there our luck ran out as they were not doing food. So off we rode to Markfield and the Coach & Horses.

The forecast rain started during lunch but stopped by the time we left. Unfortunately it did come again and hit us on the way back to Ratby. The wet weather gear had to come out even though we sheltered under trees.

Once the lightning and heavy thunderstorm had passed we carried on without any further drama. Great to get out and about despite the forecast.

Wharf Inn, Welford

Five Embers met at Market Harborough on an overcast windy morning but undeterred set off. Following a discussion it was decided to get the hard part done first so we headed uphill and into the wind to East Farndon. From there we went west then south towards Naseby, again generally uphill and into the wind. The highest point was just north of Clipston next to a second world war Royal Observer Corp lookout post. The views were incredible in all directions. Carrying on we went via Clipston and Naseby where we turned west on a road that took us to Welford. Lunch was at the old favourite pub, the Wharf Inn where the beer was definitely on form.

After a well-earned lunch we reaped the benefits of the outward journey and had an amazing ride back to Market Harborough. This took us through Sibbertoft to Marston Trussell and back to East Farndon. Mainly downhill with the wind behind us. Glorious. A journey of two halves today with a great afternoon in bright sunshine and all the elements on our side.

Small group of Embers did a local ride (25 miles+) today. Called into a fellow Ember for a cup of tea and hiding behind the sofa does not deter us. Cycled out to Rothley and The Woodmans Stroke, where food and drink is always good. Warm overcast day with good company.

This week many Embers cycled miles on two thirsty rides.

Appleby Inn, Appleby Parva

Did an old favourite ride today, Coalville to the Appleby Inn at Appleby Parva for lunch and to celebrate Grandad Ben's new granddaughter.
Another lovely early autumn day.

We were tricked into following the mountain bike trail back into Coalville. We were glad to survive and take refreshments in Grounds Snibston Colliery Park Cafe.
