Diss, Norfolk

Squadron 322*, consisting of four Embers, relocated to Norfolk for photo reconnaissance sorties over the surrounding terrain. Here are their results.

* Named for the combined ages of the four Embers.

Red Lion, Hollington

On a lovely clear day six Embers met at Mercia Marina with four having biked in from Worthington. The start was an obligatory coffee at the Willow Tree tea room on the Marina then with VJ leading we set off west to Hilton along the A5132. There we headed north following the Sutton Brook on fairly flat roads to Sutton on the Hill (which wasn’t). Then onto Longford and finally to our old favourite pie pub at Hollington. The Red Lion served us well with their usual huge choice of pies and great beer.

We started the return journey by looking at Hollington village itself as we had been near it often but never cycled through. After dropping down southwards we hit Longlane and went east to the Lees turn off. Continuing south we joined the railway line that took us into Etwall. After rejoining the road we travelled back to the A5132 then to the Marina again for another coffee. A great day out.

This week many Embers cycled miles between them.

Royal Horseshoes, Waltham

Autumn is here and extra layers have started to go on. Eleven Embers met at Melton Country Park on an overcast mildly windy day. Probably the last time shorts will be worn this year. The journey today took us through Melton and onto Burton Lazars, all uphill. From there we headed east to near Stapleford where a banana break was called. The last leg of the morning ride saw us head north to Freeby and on to the Royal Horseshoes pub at Waltham on the Wolds.

After beer and victuals a different route was taken back to Melton. We passed through Wycomb then onto Scalford where four of our party split off to return home via Asfordby. The remainder dropped down to Thorpe Arnold and back into the Country Park. A great day out.
