Queens Head, Newton Regis

Embers met at Sutton Cheney Wharf with most having cycled in from various locations. We split the group in two with one group leaving just after 10 and getting to Newton Regis just after midday. This group of six Embers travelled west down Fenn Lane then turned up towards Upton and onto Witherley. From there they passed through Atherstone and up to The Smithy Farm Shop near Grendon.

After coffee progressed north to Warton, Austrey and finally to the Queens Head in Newton Regis. Following lunch they returned via Austrey, Orton on the Hill, Sheepy Parva, Shenton and then back to Sutton Cheney Wharf. Great weather with no rain and little wind.

To Red Lion Market Bosworth

Group B loitred at Sutton Wharf as long as we could before a social ride on a circle back again via the Red Lion.

Today's Embers ride was just an amble through the Leicestershire Countryside. Sunshine, blossom and wildflowers to enjoy before lunch at the pub with no everything. "You name, we haven't got it". Great day.

This week many Embers in two groups cycled miles between them.

Golden Fleece, Stamford

Seven Embers met today at Manton expecting mixed weather. Luckily this did not materialize till after we got back in the afternoon. The day began with coffee at “The View” at Rutland Nursery where it was decided to go for Stamford despite the forecast. We headed east through Edith Weston to Empingham. The banana break was after this town and we then carried on to Tickencote and Great Casterton before arriving at the Golden Fleece in Stamford for lunch. The pub has had a refurbishment but there were still decent beers on offer.

Following lunch we took our usual route back west by going first to Ketton before turning north to Edith Weston. From there we sought out a café called Picks Barn at Lyndon before heading back to Manton.

So as the poor forecast did not materialize we had a great day out in sunny Rutland

While the main group of Embers went over the border to foreign lands (Rutland) a small group of us stayed local. Fortunately the rain stayed away on our trip to Great Glen where we enjoyed tea or coffee.

Saturday, camping in the Creuse region of France and chose to follow a scenic route supplied by the campsite of a 19 mile circuit swooping down curving round, and then ascending the hills rather more slowly.

We passed through mixed woodland and small fields, hamlets with friendly people who warned us to look out for the motor cross race race. This added an amusing dimension to the ride as they noisily criss crossed the minor roads in front/behind/ along side us.

We paused for crepes and coffee and completed the trip with a meander round the old part of Boussec. We had temperatures of 9 - 12°C, hail, cloud and brief sun but only about 8mph wind.

This week many Embers cycled miles between them.

Malt Shovel, Shardlow

Fourteen Embers met today at the Worthington Cloud trail southern start point. We cycled north on the old railway line up to the River Trent where we had a banana break. After the break we stayed on the cycle route by turning left onto a canal tow path which took us to Swarkestone. From there our route finder General VJ took us into Chellaston just to the south of Derby then onto Thulston and finally into Shardlow for lunch. Given the number of people we split into two groups for lunch. One group stayed at the disorganized Malt Shovel and the other went to the Navigation Inn.

Meeting up again after lunch the two groups travelled together back to the Worthington Cloud Trail via Ashton on-Trent and Weston on-Trent. Turning south onto the trail we made our way towards Melbourne where we had coffee at Melbourne Hall. By this time two of the group had gone back to Worthington ahead of the rest and after Melbourne two more went back home using a different route. The remaining ten carried on south to the cars at the starting point at Worthington. The weather was kind and overall we had a good day out.

Nice to feel warmth of sun today. We stopped in Shardlow for lunch at another pub struggling for food and beer. On the way home called in at Melbourne for a cuppa.

This week many Embers cycled miles between them.

Shires Inn, Peatling Parva

After an exceptionally hot May Bank Holiday, overnight thunderstorms brought a cooler breeze for our morning gathering at Kibworth. A leisurely pace took us to the Shires Inn at Peatling Parva.

New management at the Shires Inn has retained its high standard. Before our return ride, Grahame entertained us with a game of "Find-The-Nail" while he repaired a puncture.

So far this week many riders have registered miles.

Uncivil War

Bonus ride on Sunday 31 May, with Ride Leicester, to discover the horrors of the 1645 siege and sacking of Leicester

Six Embers joined the ride, although we suspect some only went for the lunch at Siver Street Cafe.

Total of many riders registered miles.

Summer flies.
